Thomas Victor Wilmott Watkins was born on 12 July 1887, the son of Thomas Perry Watkins, a schoolmaster, and his wife Julia. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank and was a member of its staff sports club.
During the First World War Watkins left his job at the bank's head office in Princes Street, London, to join the army, serving as a Private in the City of London Yeomanry (Roughriders). He was killed in action at Salonika, Greece, on 4 March 1917. He was 29 years old. His younger brother Norman, who also worked for the bank, had been killed on the Western Front the previous year.
