Herbert Beight Withers Twizell was born in Ashford, Middlesex, on 4 August 1892, the son of John Twizell and his wife Katharine. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.

During the First World War Twizell left his job at the bank's head office in Princes Street, London, to go on military service. Corporal Twizell of the City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders) was killed in action in the Middle East on 10 August 1916, a few days after his 24th birthday.
