Wilfrid Stowell

Bank: London County & Westminster Bank

Place of work: Littlehampton branch

Died: 22 March 1918

Wilfrid Stowell was born on 3 June 1890. On his 17th birthday in 1907 Stowell followed in the footsteps of his older brother Robert by going to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank and both Stowell brothers became employees of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

In December 1915 Stowell's brother Robert left the bank to join the army, and Stowell took over Robert's job at the bank's Littlehampton branch. The following July Stowell himself also joined up, and by 1918 was a Second Lieutenant in the Leinster Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 22 March 1918. He was 27 years old and left a widow, Emily Agnes, whom he had married in 1913. His brother Robert had been killed four months earlier.
