Stanley Earl Richards was born on 14 March 1889, the son of David Lloyd Richards, a commercial traveller, and his wife Elizabeth. In December 1905, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England at its Abergavenny branch. In March 1910 he moved to Newport, Monmouthshire branch as a clerk. In January 1913 he moved to Cardiff branch, where he was described in a staff report as 'a hard working clerk … anxious to please and do his best'.
During the First World War Richards left the bank to join the army. By 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Monmouthshire Regiment, on active service in France. He died there on 29 August 1916, of wounds received in action. He was 27 years old.
