John Reid was born in London on 25 April 1893, the son of Peter Reid, a mason, and his wife. In February 1912, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Haymarket branch. In January 1913 he moved to Edinburgh Canonmills branch.
During the First World War Reid left the bank to go on military service, and by 1918 he was a Lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 4 April 1918. He was 24 years old.
