William Anthony Phypers was born on 27 January 1885, the son of William Phypers and his wife Mary. In March 1903, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Phypers became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
In November 1914 Phypers left his job as a clerk at the bank's Tunbridge Wells branch to join the army, becoming a Serjeant in the Royal Sussex Regiment. He died on 17 July 1916 of wounds received in action nearly three weeks earlier. He was 31 years old and left a widow, Audrey, whom he had married in September 1915.
