James Ewart Paterson was born in Eyemouth in 1899, the son of William Paterson, a draper, and his wife Isabella. In October 1914 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Ayton branch.
During the First World War Paterson left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 30 September 1918. He was 19 years old.
