Hubert John Palmar was born on 4 October 1883. In August 1901, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Palmar became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.
In July 1916 Palmar left his job as a clerk at the bank's Brighton branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Grenadier Guards. He died in England on 19 June 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Elsie Florence, whom he had married in 1910, and a seven-year-old daugter, Betty, who later became a beneficiary of the Bank Clerks' Orphanage.
