Francis Preston was born in Leicester in 1894, the son of Joseph Doyle Preston, a teacher, and his wife Lorisa Goldfinch Preston. He was educated at Wyggeston School, Leicester, after which he went to work for Parr's Bank.
During the First World War Preston left his job at the bank's Leicester branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action during an attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt, France, on 13 October 1915. He was 21 years old.
