Charles Edgar Plank was born on 6 April 1889, the son of William Charles Plank and his wife Eliza Ann. In July 1906, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Plank became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

In February 1916 Plank left his job as a clerk at the bank's Worthing branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Serjeant in the Royal Sussex Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed by a shell there on 20 September 1917. He was 28 years old.
