Allen George Parkhouse was born in Hendon on 12 May 1887, the son of Thomas Parkhouse, a butcher, and his wife Martha Baretta. He worked for Union of London & Smith's Bank at its Princes Street office in London. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.

Early in the First World War Parkhouse left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He was 29 years old and left a widow, Mary Elizabeth, whom he had married in August 1915.
