Donal Charles O'Connell was born on 11 May 1895, the second son of James John O'Connell, a bank manager. In November 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for The National Bank as a probationer at its Cork branch, where his father was manager. His uncle also worked for the bank, as manager of its Tralee branch.

During the First World War O'Connell left the bank to join the army. By September 1916 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Connaught Rangers, attached to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Somme on 9 September 1916. He was 21 years old.
