Norman Nesbitt was born in North Shields on 10 November 1889, the son of the Reverend John Nesbitt, a Congregational church minister, and his wife Marianne. In August 1906, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Wetherby branch. After completing his apprenticeship he stayed on as a clerk, and in February 1910 was transferred to Guisborough branch. Five months later he moved again, to Sunderland branch. In September 1915 he was transferred to Stokesley branch.
During the First World War Nesbitt served as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He was killed in action on 21 August 1918. He was 28 years old.
