Alfred George Norton was born on 12 November 1894, the son of Alfred Norton and his wife Emily Louise. In July 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
In August 1914 Norton left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to join the army, initially in the 28th (Artists' Rifles) Battalion of the London Regiment. He was subsequently commissioned into the East Lancashire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Norton died in France on 9 May 1915. He was 20 years old.
The bank's staff magazine quoted a tribute to Norton that had appeared in his parish magazine: 'He will be remembered by us for the charm of his manner, the sweetness of his temper and the purity of his heart.'
