Thomas McLean was born in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, in 1898, the son of James McLean. In February 1914, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Cumnock branch.
During the First World War McLean left his job at the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). He died on 23 June 1918 of wounds received in action in Belgium. He was 19 years old.
