Robert John Morris was born in Llanuwchllyn, Merioneth, on 20 April 1894, the son of Morris Edward Morris, a tax collector, and his wife Kate Blodwen Morris. In March 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Cardiff Bute Docks branch. In August 1913 he transferred to Denbigh branch, where he completed his apprenticeship and became a clerk.

During the First World War Morris joined the army, becoming a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He died on 30 March 1917, of wounds received in action on the Western Front. He was 22 years old.
