Robert Marvin was born in London in 1884, the son of Robert and Charlotte Marvin. He became a soldier in the Royal Fusiliers, and served in Bermuda, Mauritius and South Africa. He left the army after 13 years, and took a job with Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Princes Street office, probably as a messenger.

Upon the outbreak of war in 1914 Marvin rejoined his old regiment. Corporal Robert Marvin of the Royal Fusiliers died in France on 17 November 1914. He was 30 years old.
