Leslie Edward Frederick Matthews was born in Battersea, London, on 9 June 1894, the son of Edward Matthews, a commercial traveller, and his wife Elizabeth Louisa. After finishing his education he initially worked as a merchant's clerk, but by 1912 was working for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Princes Street office. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club, and played for the bank's football team.
During the First World War Matthews joined the army, serving as a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He arrived in France in August 1915, and was killed on the Western Front on 30 April 1916. He was 21 years old.
