Leopold Reginald Merryfield was born on 10 May 1882, the son of Henry Francis Merryfield, a draper's buyer, and his wife Mary Anne. In April 1906, when he was 23 years old, he went to work for The National Bank in London.
During the First World War Merryfield left his job in the bank's London banking department to go on military service. By 1916 he was a Captain in the East Surrey Regiment, on active service on the Western Front. He died there on 28 August 1916 of wounds received in action. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Mabel, whom he had married the previous year.
