John Mann was born in London in 1882, the son of John Mann, a bricklayer. In May 1905 he married Sarah Beasley. At that time his occupation was listed as 'packing case maker', but he later took a job as lift attendant in The Royal Bank of Scotland's London office.

Early in the First World War Mann left the bank to go on military service as a Private in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays). He was killed in action in France on 21 November 1914. He was 31 years old.
