Harold Charles Robert Millward was born in Tudhoe, County Durham, on 8 January 1898, the son of Samuel Millward, an iron manufacturing worker, and his wife Florence. He was educated at the Orme Boys' School, Newcastle-under-Lyme. In September 1915, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Wem branch.

In July 1916 Millward left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the London Rifle Brigade. He later transferred to the Royal Irish Rifles as a Rifleman. He was wounded in the neck by gunshot on 8 August 1917 and died in hospital in France nearly a week later, on 14 August 1917. He was 19 years old.
