George Robert McDowall was born in 1872, the son of Andrew and Sarah McDowall. He joined the army, and served in South Africa during the Boer War.
By the outbreak of war in 1914, McDowall was working as a messenger at Union of London & Smiths Bank's Charing Cross branch in London. He rejoined the army, and travelled to France in June 1915, serving as a Serjeant in the Royal Engineers. He died in France on 10 May 1916. He was 43 years old and left a widow, Emma, and three children.
