Duncan Macleay was born in Avoch, Scotland, in 1897. In July 1914, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Munlochy branch.

During the First World War Macleay joined the army, serving as a Private in the Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in France on 1 May 1917.
