Cecil David Musgrave was born in Woolwich on 9 February 1881, the son of William Musgrave, a soldier, and his wife Martha Elizabeth. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank at its London Princes Street office. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.

During the First World War Musgrave served in the army, arriving in France in November 1914. By 1918 he had risen to the rank of Captain in the Army Service Corps. He died of pneumonia in France on 15 November 1918, four days after the signing of the Armistice. He was 37 years old.
