Arthur Conrad Michelsen was born on 25 June 1891, the son of Hugh Edward Michelsen, a clerk, and his wife Mary. He was educated at Haberdashers' School, Cricklewood, after which he went to work for Union of London & Smiths Bank. Outside work he was a boy scout officer and a volunteer soldier, a member of the the 28th (Artists' Rifles) Battalion of the London Regiment.

At the outbreak of war in 1914 Michelsen was mobilised with his battalion, leaving his job at the bank's London Finsbury Circus branch to go on active service. He was posted to France in October 1914. In January 1917 he was commissioned into the Royal Field Artillery.

Second Lieutenant Michelsen was killed in action on the Western Front on 18 October 1917. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Sarah, whom he had married the previous December.
