Sidney George Lewis was born on 6 January 1887, the son of Charles Lewis, a clerk, and his wife Emily. In June 1906, when he was 19 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank and Lewis became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

In September 1914 Lewis left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Shoreditch branch to join the army. By 1916 he was a Private in the Royal Fusiliers, on active service in France. He was wounded in action in July 1916 and died of his injuries some days later, on 27 July 1916. He was 29 years old.
