John Alfred Laughton was born on 14 March 1897, the son of James Laughton, a farmer, and his wife Mary. In June 1914, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kirkwall branch.
During the First World War Laughton left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 9 September 1916. He was 19 years old.

I felt very proud to read your piece about John Alfred Laughton. He was my Great Uncle. My Grandfather who is now 93 was named after him, he is also John Alfred Laughton.
