James Lyon was born on 25 October 1898, the son of John D Lyon, a schoolmaster, and his wife Margaret Howat Lyon. In June 1914, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kilmarnock branch.

During the First World War Lyon left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action on the Western Front on 28 March 1918. He was 19 years old.
