William Ker was born in Hawick in 1895, the son of Thomas Ker. In May 1910, when he was 14 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Hawick branch.
During the First World War Ker left his job at the bank to join the army. By 1917 he was a Corporal in the Lothians and Border Horse, on active service in Greece. He died there on 19 September 1917. He was 21 years old.
