Edward John Mosley Kelley was born in Staffordshire on 1 December 1884. In April 1900, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for Crompton & Evans' Union Bank at its head office in Derby. In 1914 Crompton & Evan's Union Bank was acquired by Parr's Bank, and Kelley became an employee of the larger bank.
In December 1917 Kelley left his job in the bank's Derby Midland Road branch to go on military service as a Private, and later Lance Corporal, in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 25 August 1918. He was 33 years old and left a widow, Gertrude Irene, whom he had married in 1912, and a five-year-old son, Bernard.
