Robert Brown Johnstone was born in Edinburgh in 1894, the only son of Samuel Johnstone, a postman, and his wife Jeanie. In February 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Pitt Street branch.
During the First World War Johnstone left the bank to go on military service as a Private in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry. He was killed in action in the Dardanelles on 23 October 1915. He was 21 years old.
