Robert Willis Johnston was born in Cockenzie in around 1895, the son of Thomas Johnston, a fisherman, and his wife Mary. In October 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Musselburgh branch.
During the First World War Johnston left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in Belgium on 22 August 1917. He was 22 years old.
