Leonard Percy Hewett was born in Paddington, London, in 1894, the son of Leonard William Hewett, a shop worker, and his wife Ada Florence. From 1912 he worked for Coutts & Co.
Outside work Hewett was a territorial soldier, a member of the 14th (London Scottish) Battalion of the London Regiment. He was mobilised with his battalion at the outbreak of war in 1914, leaving his job in the bank's securities department to go on active service. The London Scottish left for France in September, and on 31 October 1914 became the first territorial battalion to engage the enemy in the First World War, at the First Battle of Messines. The battalion suffered heavy losses, among them Private Hewett. He was reported missing, later presumed dead, on 1 November 1914. He was 20 years old.
