John Ifor Hopwood was born on 26 October 1898, the son of a Wesleyan Methodist minister. He was educated at County School, Grove Park, Wrexham.

In April 1916, when Hopwood was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its London office. He also joined the bank's staff sports club.

In February 1917 Hopwood left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. In September 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal for distinguished service in France. Private Hopwood was killed in action in France on 4 November 1918, just a week before the signing of the Armistice. He was 20 years old.
