James Herdman was born in Leith on 20 February 1895, the younger son of James Herdman, a mechanical engineer, and his wife Isabella Graham Herdman. In August 1911, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Leith branch. In December 1913 he transferred to the secretary's office at head office in Edinburgh.

During the First World War Herdman left the bank to join the army. By 1917 he was a Lieutenant in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), attached to the Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on 9 May 1917 of wounds received in action on the Western Front. He was 22 years old.
