James Golding Harding was born on 21 March 1896, the second son of Charles Harding, a bank manager, and his wife Eleanor. In June 1913, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for The National Bank at its Ennistymon branch in County Clare, Ireland, where his father was manager.

In September 1915 Harding left the bank to join the army. By 1917 he was a Captain in the Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 30 October 1917. He was 21 years old.
