RBS remembers 1914-1918

Herbert Howarth

Bank: Parr’s Bank

Place of work: Bury branch

Died: 1 July 1916

Herbert Howarth was born in Bury in 1894, the son of Robert and Mary Ann Howarth. He was educated at Bury Grammar School, and from about 1910 worked for Parr's Bank.

In September 1914 Howarth left his job at the bank's Bury branch to volunteer for the 17th (Manchester Pals') Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

Private Howarth was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, while taking part in the attack on the village of Montauban. He was 21 years old. Later that month Howarth's elder brother Ernest was also killed on the Somme.

Howarth's body was one of the few to be recovered when the British army searched the battlefield at the end of the war. He was reburied at Peronne Road British Cemetery, Maricourt.
