Eric Ferguson Hair was born on 6 July 1898, the son of a cigar trader. He was educated at Merchant Taylor's School and Margate Grammar School. In September 1915, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its London office. In January 1917 his manager described him as 'a quiet steady apprentice who works well and is very reliable. Punctual and regular.'
The following month Hair joined the army, serving as a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He was killed by a shell in an attack near Passchendaele on 27 September 1917. He was 19 years old.
