Cecil Mackenzie Hughman was born on 22 August 1892, the youngest son of Newman Reeve Hughman, an army officer, and his wife Gertrude. He was educated at Christ's Hospital by a presentation from William Samuel Deacon, a director of Williams Deacon's Bank, and left there in 1908. He subsequently undertook a course at King's College. In May 1911 he went to work for Williams Deacon's Bank at its Marylebone branch in London.
Hughman was commissioned into the army in September 1914 and served at the Front in France from March 1915. By 1916 he was a Captain in the Middlesex Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 18 September 1916. He was 24 years old.
