Archibald Houston was born in Buckhaven, Fife, on 29 July 1895, the son of Peter and Jane Houston. He was educated at Kirkcaldy High School and Buckhaven Higher Grade School. In December 1910, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kirkcaldy branch.
In November 1914 Houston left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was posted to the Dardanelles in May 1915, and died in hospital in Malta on 30 October 1915 of wounds received while out with a bombing party the previous day. He was 20 years old.
