Alexander Sidney Hill was born in Clifton, Bristol, in 1891, the son of John Sidney Hill, a metallic bedstead maker, and his wife Mary Lansdown Hill. From about 1907 he worked for Parr's Bank.

During the First World War Hill left his job at the bank's Bristol Stokes Croft branch to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Gloucestershire Regiment, on active service on the Western Front. He was killed in action there on 9 October 1917. He was 26 years old and left a widow, Annetta Marjorie.
