Alexander Hay was born in Duddingston in 1899, the son of John Hay, a joiner, and his wife Jeannie Hay. In November 1914, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Edinburgh Pitt Street branch.
During the First World War Hay left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He died of spotted fever on 8 January 1918. He was 18 years old.
