RBS remembers 1914-1918

Thomas Gibson

Bank: Parr’s Bank

Place of work: London Bartholomew Lane office

Died: 5 October 1918

Thomas Henry Gibson was born on 26 July 1884, the son of Thomas Henry Gibson and his wife Mary Ann. In November 1902 he went to work for Parr's Bank at its London Bartholomew Lane office. He also joined the bank's staff sports club.

In June 1916 Gibson left the bank to go on military service, joining the Suffolk Regiment. He was initially classed as unfit for foreign service and stationed on the east coast of England, but he was later passed fit for general service. He was transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and posted to Italy, then on to France. It was there that Private Gibson was killed in action on 5 October 1918. He was 34 years old and left a widow, Eveline Jane.

His obituary in the bank's staff magazine noted, 'Gibson was [of] a quiet and unassuming nature, very conscientious and kind, with a keen sense of duty. Those with whom he was brought in contact mourn the loss of a good friend'.
