Robert Goodall was born in Scone, Perthshire, in 1895, the son of Archibald Goodall, a farmer, and his wife Annie. In October 1912 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Newburgh branch.
During the First World War Goodall left the bank to join the army. He served as a Private in the Royal Horse, the Royal Field Artillery, and finally the Tank Corps. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 1 December 1917.
