John Purves Gray was born in Ballymoney in 1885. He worked for Ulster Bank at a number of its branches, including Antrim, Longford, Ballymena, Strabane and Manorhamilton.
In March 1916 Gray left the bank to join the army, and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was wounded in the leg in December 1917, but after several months' convalescence was able to return to active duty. Shortly afterwards, on 1 October 1918, he was killed in action in France.
