Ian Dalgleish Gowan was born in Scotland in 1898, the third and youngest son of John Gowan, an inspector with Commercial Bank of Scotland, and his wife Margaret. He was educated at George Watson's College. In September 1913 he went to work for his father's bank, Commercial Bank of Scotland, as an apprentice at its Edinburgh North Bridge branch.

In November 1914 Gowan left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was promoted to Corporal in 1915. He was killed in action at Vimy Ridge on 9 April 1917. He was 19 years old.
