Duncan Matheson Goodyear was born on 12 September 1892, the son of Arthur Goodyear, a bank worker, and his wife Lizzie Mabel. In March 1910, when he was 17 years old, Goodyear followed his father into banking, going to work for London County & Westminster Bank. He started at the bank's London Lombard Street branch, before transferring to Chatham branch. Two years later he was joined at the bank by his younger brother, Raymond Norman Goodyear.
In May 1915 Goodyear left the bank to go on military service. He was commissioned into the Royal Naval Division, and later transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Lieutenant Goodyear was killed in action on 29 June 1917 near Ypres, Belgium. He was 24 years old. His brother Raymond, also of the bank, had been killed two months earlier.
