John Eric Robert Firmin was born in Richmond on 5 February 1893, the son of Nicholas Firmin and his wife Amy. He was educated at St Paul's School, London.

In June 1912, when he was 19 years old, Firmin went to work for London County & Westminster Bank, where his elder brother Maurice already worked. He was a keen sportsman, playing rugby and badminton for bank teams.

Early in the First World War Firmin left his job at the bank's London Lambeth branch to go on military service, and by 1915 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Wiltshire Regiment. He was killed in action in the Dardanelles on 10 August 1915. He was 22 years old. His elder brother Maurice, also of the bank, was killed in action the following year.
