Frederick Flett was born on 18 September 1888, the youngest son of Robert Flett, a Kirkwall shipping agent. In May 1906, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kirkwall branch. He became a clerk there in May 1909. He moved briefly to Carnoustie branch in May 1914, before returning to Kirkwall in August that year.
During the First World War Flett joined the army, and by 1918 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in an accident in Egypt on 9 March 1918. He was 29 years old.
