Douglas Towry Farrier was born on 6 November 1888, the son of James Tomlin John Farrier, a merchant marine Captain, and his wife Brenda Phillis. In December 1904, when Farrier was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Tamworth branch. In March 1910 he became a clerk at Middlesbrough branch. In April 1911 he moved to London office.
During the First World War Farrier joined the army. In August 1917 he was commissioned into the Royal Garrison Artillery. Second Lieutenant Douglas Towry Farrier died in Belgium on 1 October 1917. He was 28 years old and left a widow, Netta, whom he had married in 1915.
